Frequently Asked Questions About Hospitalists

What is a Hospitalist?

Hospitalists are board-certified physicians who take care of you during your hospital stay at Anderson Hospital. They work in this hospital in Maryville, Ill., and will manage your care while you’re here. They will work closely with your primary care doctor and any other specialists involved in your treatment plan.

Why is a Hospitalist Caring for You?

It’s probable that your regular doctor has enlisted the help of a hospitalist for your care while you're in the hospital. Hospitalists are on-site and available throughout the day to attend to your needs, while your primary care doctor may have other patients to see in their office and at the hospital.

How Does the Hospitalist Practice Work?

Our team of hospitalists will provide daily care and oversee your treatment until you are discharged from the hospital. They are easily accessible to you and your family for any inquiries or discussions regarding your treatment. Additionally, they will collaborate with other physicians to ensure you receive comprehensive care.

What is the Relationship Between the Hospitalist and Your Primary Care Physician?

Your primary care physician and hospitalist work together as a team to ensure you receive the best care possible. Your primary care doctor will provide your medical history, and all doctors involved will communicate any significant findings or events related to your health. Throughout your stay, they will continue to discuss your care, and your primary care physician can visit you at any time. Finally, before you leave, the hospitalist will send a detailed report and treatment plan to your primary care physician.

What if You Need Another Specialist in the Hospital?

During your stay, if you require the attention of a specialist other than your hospitalist, they will make the necessary arrangements. If you have been receiving treatment from another doctor, kindly inform us so that we can keep them updated on your hospital stay.

What Happens to Your Care Once You Are Discharged?

After getting clearance for discharge, the hospitalist will provide you with a treatment plan and prescriptions for necessary medication. It's important for you to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor, as he or she will take over your medical care. However, if you have any questions about your stay at Anderson Hospital, you’re welcome to contact the hospitalist.

What If You Don’t Have a Regular Primary Care Physician?

If you don’t have a primary care physician, we can assist you. Simply ask any Anderson Hospital staff member, and we'll help you locate a doctor who can provide ongoing medical care after your discharge. Additionally, we'll send your medical records from your hospital stay to the physician.
