Celebrating 43 Years of Service

February 14, 2024
Donna Wendel, RN, IT Senior Applications Manager

It’s not often that a person’s first employer remains their only employer through retirement.  But Anderson Hospital has had several employees fall into that category and celebrate 40+ years with us.  Donna Wendel, RN, is one of those longtime employees and recently celebrated her 43rd work anniversary with us!  Donna has seen the hospital evolve into the healthcare system it is today.  She shared her story with us after being surprised by her colleagues with an amazing cake (shout out to Silly Grandma’s Sweets in Troy) to celebrate the milestone. This will be her last anniversary celebrated as she is retiring in September!

Here’s her story…

I actually graduated in January 1981 and started at Anderson on February 9 with my license pending after taking the boards. I worked on 3rd Medical for about 3 ½ years (before there was an IMU).  I transferred to the 7-Room ED and worked there about 3 ½ years.  Next, I went to the OR for about 14 years working as a Scrub Nurse, Circulator, First Assistant, Autotransfusionist and as an Ortho Team Nurse.  When the hospital planned to transition to electronic records I was the Team Leader for the OR Implementation Team because I had taken a computer literacy class.   When that project was wrapping up the IT Director encouraged me to apply for a position that was open. After a great deal of soul searching on whether or not I wanted to leave bed-side nursing I applied.  She  interviewed me on a Friday and immediately offered me the job. I started the following Monday.  I’ve been in IT since 2001.  I stayed at Anderson because I had gone to Barnes Hospital School of Nursing and done all of my clinical experience in a  very large teaching facility.   I liked working at this smaller hospital close to home where there were opportunities for me to learn new skills as the hospital expanded and  added new services to meet the needs of the community.

Congratulations Donna!
