July 10 (Maryville, IL) – Catey Chandler, RN, of Anderson Hospitalwas recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted read:
“My frail 91-year-old sister-in-law, Sheila Dean, fell and broke her hip Monday, June 9, and was taken to Anderson Hospital for care. She was in pain and confused, as she has mid-stage Alzheimers disease. She is originally from India but speaks English very well. Nurse Catey Chandler noticed that Sheila was refusing food and water and took the time to befriend Sheila (who weighs only 64 lbs.). She asked what kind of food Sheila liked and learned that she liked spicy Indian food. They had an animated conversation about Indian cooking and spices. Catey then called the only Indian restaurant in the area in a nearby town, ordered a meal, and had it delivered to Sheila at the hospital. Catey and others were delighted to see Sheila eat the food with great relish and insist on sharing tastes of it with them. Sheila’s family are so touched by Nurse Catey Chandlers kindness and empathy that we hope you will consider her for the Daisy Award.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
