As reported by Illinois Department of Public Health, confirmed cases of MEASLES have been identified in Madison County this week. Measles is a contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person breaths, coughs, or sneezes.
Symptoms include fever, cough, red/watery eyes, and runny nose followed by the development of a rash that usually starts on the head or hairline and spreads down the body. Contagious periods start 4 days before through 4 days after rash onset.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please stay at home to minimize exposing others and contact your health care provider to receive personalized care instructions. If you need to visit your provider, urgent care or emergency room, please wear a mask upon entering. Masks are readily available at entrances. Notify healthcare personnel as soon as you arrive if you’ve been exposed or having symptoms.
Most individuals can manage care at home with rest, fever control, and hydration as long as symptoms remain mild. While measles can cause complications such as ear infections, diarrhea, or pneumonia, many cases resolve with supportive care in a safe home environment. High – risk individuals including young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to severe illness and should contact their healthcare provider promptly for guidance.
